Teams | Saving Directly to Teams & Using File Explorer Syncing

This document can help you sync Teams file locations.

Traditionally, Microsoft operating systems have used File Explorer as an easy way to save files on a local computer or network drive locations.  Since files saved in Teams are a little more difficult to navigate or manage, you might be looking for ways to save directly TO Teams file locations, or do what Microsoft calls SYNCING those folders directly to the File Explorer.

PLEASE NOTE! These directions also apply to document folders in the Staff Intranet / Daily News on your specific pages and sites.

Choose the option below that best meets your needs:

Save Office Files directly to Teams Folders

  1. From the Office product you're using (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc), click File > Save As

  2. Click on Sites - Fox Valley Technical College

  3. Your recently accessed Teams, as well as sites you are following, will be listed - click on the appropriate option

  4. Click Documents

  5. Click on the appropriate channel
NOTE: If a channel was renamed, the original channel name may be shown instead of the updated name...Microsoft is fixing this so when a channel is renamed the folder name is also renamed but that hasn't been released yet

  6. If there are sub-folders, drill into desired location

  7. Click Save.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are using non-Office Files, you'll need to use the Sync options in the following boxes

Sync a single Team's Channel to your File Explorer

  1. In Teams, go to the Files tab

  2. Click Sync

  3. In File Explorer, the synced channel will show under Fox Valley Technical College as Team Name - Channel Name

Screen shot of the channel showing in File Explorer

Sync all Channels in any individual Team to your File Explorer

  1. In Teams, go to the Files tab (it doesn't matter which channel, just pick a channel of the team you want to sync)

  2. Click Open in SharePoint

  3. Click Documents

Screen Shot of the Documents link needed to click on

  4. Click Sync

  5. In File Explorer, the synced team will show under Fox Valley Technical College as Team Name - Documents, and if you expand or open will see all the channels listed

Screen shot of all channels listed under the Team in File Explorer

Turn off synced folders

  1. Click the OneDrive icon in the system tray (in bottom right corner by the clock)

  2. Click Help & Settings

  3. Click Settings

  4. Click the Stop sync link next to the appropriate location

  5. Click Stop sync to confirm

  6. Click OK

  7. This stops syncing, but does not delete your local copy of the files, so open File Explorer

  8. Click on Fox Valley Technical College

  9. Folders that are no longer synced will not have an icon in the Status column

    Screen shot of icons missing

  10. Right click on the desired folder and select Delete - this will delete your copy, will not delete the content in Teams (as long as it's no longer being synced)
