OneDrive | Files On-Demand on Windows
The big picture:
Files On-Demand is ON by default at FVTC, letting you see all files without using local storage. Why it matters:
You save disk space while still accessing files when needed. You control what stays on your device vs. in the cloud.Note: Computers at Fox Valley Technical College have the feature Files On-Demand turned ON by default (This is enforced by Policy). On personally owned devices you can turn this feature on or off at your discretion.
How it works
- Blue cloud icon = Online-only
- File lives in OneDrive, not on your device
- Opens only when connected to the internet
- Opened file = Locally available
- Downloads to your device when opened
- Works offline afterward
- Right-click → Free up space to return it to online-only
- Green check = Always on this device
- File stays downloaded
- Available anytime, even offline
- Takes up disk space
What you can do:
- Keep files offline: Right-click → Always keep on this device
- Free space: Right-click → Free up space
