How to associate .ica files with Citrix

This article will outline how to associate the .ica file extension with the Citrix Connection Manager.

Option 1 - Command Line:

1. Click Start.
2. In the Start Search box, type cmd.
2. Right click the Command Prompt icon and choose Run as Administrator.
3. If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action that it displays is what you want, and then click Continue.
4. Paste (CTRL+V) in this command:
 
assoc .ica="C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\ICA Client\wfcrun32.exe"

5. Press enter to execute the command you pasted in.
6. Close command window and now your computer will associate .ica files with the Citrix Connection Manager.

Option 2 - Manual Steps (GUI):

1. Do the following:
- In Windows 10: Open the Start menu and begin typing Default Programs in the search field. Click the Default Programs link in the search results.
- In Windows 8: Run a search, enter default programs, and click Default Programs.
- In Windows 7: Click the Windows button in the taskbar, and then click the Default programs link.
2. Click Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
3. Scroll down the list and highlight .ica.
4. Click the Change program button and select Citrix Connection Manager. If Citrix is not available, you need to navigate to and select wfcrun32.exe. Click the link for your operating system to view the steps required to do this.

5. Click the More apps link. If Citrix is still not listed, click the Look for another app on this PC link at the bottom of the list.
6. Browse to one of the following locations.
7. If you’re running a 32-bit operating system, browse to C:\Program Files\Citrix\ICA Client, select wfcrun32.exe, and click Open.
8. If you’re running a 64-bit operating system, browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\ICA Client, select wfcrun32.exe, and click Open.
9. Click Close to close the dialogs.

5. Click the More programs button. If Citrix is still not listed, click the Look for another app on this PC button at the bottom of the screen.
6. Browse to one of the following locations.
7. If you’re running a 32-bit operating system, browse to C:\Program Files\Citrix\ICA Client, select wfcrun32.exe, and click Open.
8. If you’re running a 64-bit operating system, browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\ICA Client, select wfcrun32.exe, and click Open.
9. Click Close to close the dialogs.

5. Click the Browse button and browse to one of the following locations.
6. If you’re running a 32-bit operating system, browse to C:\Program Files\Citrix\ICA Client, select wfcrun32.exe, and click OK.
7. If you’re running a 64-bit operating system, browse to C:\Program Files (x86)\Citrix\ICA Client, select wfcrun32.exe, and click OK.
8. Click Open and then click OK.
