Create a Synced Passkey

The big idea:

FVTC supports synced passkeys for work and school accounts.

Tips

  • Use your primary phone.
  • Save the passkey to your phone's password manager (iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager)
  • Use that passkey to sign in on other devices as needed.
  • Keep another authentication method available until you've verified the passkey works everywhere you need it.

Before you begin, you will need:

  • One of the following passkey providers:
    • iCloud Keychain (Apple)
    • Google Password Manager (Android/Chrome)
    • Microsoft Password Manager (where supported)
  • A device with biometric authentication or a secure PIN configured

Register a Synced Passkey

Step 1: Open Security Information

  1. Sign in to mfa.fvtc.edu
  2. Complete the MFA if prompted

Step 2: Add a Passkey

  1. Select + Add sign-in method

  2. Select Passkey

  3. Select Next

Step 3: Save the Passkey to Your Password Manager

When prompted, choose a synced passkey provider:

iPhone/iPad/iOS: Save to iCloud Keychain

    Step 4: Complete Verification

    1. Use your fingerprint, facial recognition, or device PIN.
    2. Name the passkey and tap Next if prompted

    3.  Select Done.

    Your passkey is now registered and available through your password manager.

    Sign In with a Passkey

    When accessing Microsoft 365 applications or services:

    1. Enter your work or school email address.
    2. Select Sign-in options.
    3. Select Passkey if presented.
    4. Approve the sign-in using your fingerprint, face recognition, or device PIN.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What happens if I get a new phone or computer?

    If your passkey is stored in a supported password manager and synchronized to your account, it may be available on your new device after you sign in to that password manager.

    Do I still need MFA?

    Yes. Microsoft still requires additional verification in certain situations based on security policies and risk detection.

    Is a passkey more secure than a password?

    Microsoft promotes passkeys as a phishing-resistant authentication method that helps protect against credential theft while simplifying the sign-in experience.
