Set up GitHub Education Account
The big thing
Create your GitHub Education account, enable 2FA, and apply for student benefits.Why it matters
GitHub Education gives FVTC students access to free developer tools and resources. The setup takes a few steps, and you only need to do it once.Create Account
- Go to GitHub Education
- Select Join GitHub Education

- Create your GitHub account
- Select Create an account
- Enter your FVTC id @fvtc.edu
- Create a password
- Choose a username
- Verify your email using the code Github sends you.


Configure Multifactor Authentication
- Sign in and start your application
- Log in with your new account.

- Select Start an application for GitHub Education.

- Log in with your new account.
- Confirm your school
- Choose Student.
- Select Fox Valley Technical College if it appears automatically.
- If needed, enter your school email: {studentID}@fvtc.edu

- Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA)
- Install Microsoft Authenticator on your mobile device.
- Use the app to scan the GitHub QR code.
- Enter the verification code from the app into GitHub
- Save your recovery codes
- Download your recovery codes.
- Store them somewhere secure.
- Confirm that you saved them.

- You've successfully completed 2FA

Apply for GitHub for Education
- Navigate to https://GitHub.com/settings/billing/payment_information.
- Enter your billing info to continue your application. You do not need to enter a payment method.
Your application will be automatically rejected without billing information. - Click Save billing information.
- Enter your billing info to continue your application. You do not need to enter a payment method.

- Select Education benefits in the left-side menu
- Select Start an application one more time.

- Select Student and Select this school in the pop-up window.

- Share your location with GitHub. You will not be able to upload proof of enrollment without this step.

- If prompted, allow your location to be shared with GitHub.

- If prompted, allow your location to be shared with GitHub.
- Click Continue

- Select a method to verify your enrollment. Common options include:
- Student ID card
- Class schedule
- Official or unofficial transcript
Note:
In most cases, you cannot upload an existing file. You will need to use your device's camera to take a photo of your proof of enrollment during the verification process.

- Capture a photo and submit application.

- You will receive confirmation that your application has been submitted if all steps are completed correctly.

- Your education benefits will change to approved once reviewed by GitHub and you will receive access within 72 hours of the approval date.

- Your GitHub Education account setup is complete.
